Me and a buddy made this Wet/Dry; and it's currently on a test run. We used a 30gal tank; 5gal bucket, pot scrubbies, and egg crates.

I was wondering; I know this may sound dumb to some of you experts; but just wanted some suggestions and a little insigt. Please let me know what you guys think and what I could do to make it a more efficient filter. Help out a DIY nood. THANKS. Oh almost forgot to ask; should the bucket be partially submerged in the water:confused:

you didnt mention any mechanical filtration. it would be beneficial to add a layer of filter floss at the top of the bucket before everything else, and let the water drip onto the pot scrubbies.

also, from what i understand, keeping the bucket out of the water allows the water more contact with air when dripping onto the scrubbies, and something about this is good, i forgot why lol.

a pic of the inside of the bucket may help experts in improving on your design.

So the bucket should not be slightly submerged. Cool that's how mine is set up. THANKS AGAIN

i have heard that your biomedia should be slightly submerged in water. like half in, half out.

i have 2 17gal bins for my bio media, 1 is submerged, the other is "wet/dry" i guess. i think i would go with a different container for ur bio but that will work just fine. the bigger the container tho, the more media, the more load your tank can handle. looks good tho.

if some of the bio media has to be submerged; could I just throw some scrubbies in the tank itself?? that way I would have more bio media as well would this work just as well.

Also; I've seen people with lava rocks in their wet/drys does this make much of a difference??

lava rock is just another material to use as bio media. just more suface area for bacteria to generate and survive on. i think maybe you can just toss some scrubbies in the open water area. i dont really see why not. it wont be still water, it continuesly circulates so i dont see why not.
