Alright, well I promised you guys I would find out what the deal is with using news print for reptile bedding. Sorry that it took me a while to get back to you, but the guy I needed to talk to was on vacation. Here we go.
Black ink is almost entirely soy based and is safe to use unless the newsprint you have is being printed out of a mud hut in Ethiopia.
Colored newsprint ink is basically the same. It is mainly soy based but in a powder form that has water added to it. I was told that almost all news print here in the US is enviornmentaly safe and soy based.
Colored ink used to print on glossey paper in magazines is basically the same as colored newsprint ink. But it is a heat-set ink and most if any of the toxins in it are baked out of it. Still, if you have to compare the three I would stay away from glossy paper all together.
