I have a chance to buy 5 juv carpintes at around 2" for a really good price.

I'm thinking to put them short term in my 30" x 18" x 12" tank with a 4" female EBJD, 5 zebra danios (might get moved out pretty soon to save them being eaten!) and a pair of kribs (no breeding sites in the tank).

I'm hoping that I'll get two carpintes to pair up and will then sell the remaining carpintes and have a tank devoted to the pair.

My questions are: what size do carpintes start to pair up? And how long will I be able to keep the 5 carpintes with the other fish in that tank before all hell breaks loose? If I can go a couple of months then everything will be hunky dory as I'll have a bigger tank ready for them by then.

The tank is currently filtered by an undergravel and an Eheim Classic 2215 (with Ehfisubstrat Pro), so not too worried about bioload.

Let me know what you think.

I have seen them pairing and breeding at less than 5 inches...

MFK member Filiportela has a breeding pair at around that size, now that I remember

I've seen them pair up at just over 3 inches. I think if you watch for aggression and provide some good visual barriers you would be able to keep them in that tank for 2 months or so. Just be careful, it would be horrible to lose an EBJD to aggression. You've already got her to 4 inches you're almost in the clear, just watch her with those carpinte. Good luck. :)

Lol. She's a tough cookie my EBJD. Taken no end of beatings from her brother in the past and always come out fine. She even started flaring at my male 6.5" normal JD when he first arrived. I was so scared he would eat her, so I moved her out pronto.

I have a male 4.5" EBJD coming tomorrow morning, so the carpintes will have to wait as I think he'll have more fun with my female EBJD than they would have (lol)

Thanks for your replies!
