Hey guys just converted my African cichlid tank to Central/South American so I not familiar with a few things. I just got a giant mean Carpintis and he's kicking the **** out of my two oscars I just got. Anyway he was bright blue, very beautiful but the past two days he's in breeding color for some reason. Anyone know how long they usually stay in that color? He's been in that color consistently. I mean it doesn't make any sense if he's not breeding with anything yo stay in that color....

He will be displaying at the oscars. It's not just a breeding dress. They will display like that sometimes when trying to dominate.
Generally speaking c/a cichlids are more aggressive than s/a cichlids and I don't think the two should always be mixed.
More often than not c/a will like cooler harder water and a lot of s/a will like warmer soft water. There are exceptions to this but generally that's how it is.

Cool great to know. The colors wasn't just displayed against the Oscars, it started displaying the colors a few days prior the Oscars being in the tank. Man he's mean lol!

When I kept carpintis, when they actually spawned the lower half of the fish turned almost completely black. They will show this trait to varying extents depending on mood, breeding or not.

Yep that's what he looks like. Completely black bottom half with a much lighter whitish blue head. Oh yeah black stripes too.

Are there any other cichlids in the tank other than oscars. They are not to fussy who they mate with.Lots of hybrids in the hobby have a little texas in them.

Yep. Its not just breeding, mine did that when fighting with the Festae... It looks nice though :)

The Tex can work with Oscars as ling as the personality is there. They can have temps between 68-84 degrees without side effects, thats what i know from my experiences.

And yeah. Mean. Mine has left multiple scars on me, i get a new wound everytime i put my arm in the tank, and mine is only 6"!!!

He's also showing a weird interest in the Jack Dempsey that I have. The jack is about 9 inches , can't tell if it's male or female. Hes always around the Dempsey....

It is not his breeding color. He looks like that due to how he feels.
