Seems many locations of herichthys carpintis are being crossed and inbred. Are they the next victim of the ultimate blue syndrome?
I think many people are starting to throw location tags on a fish as a gesture of quality when it's not necessarily true. You see some really high quality fish that have come out of Rio Hondo and Esconido, but it doesn't make them all so. I personally don't much care where a carpintis is from. I'm not buying one because it came from Escondido. I buy because it's a nice specimen. If it's proven from a certain location, great, use the tag. We are talking about carpintis here. One of the most commonly found and easy to breed cichlids in the US. Tons that have been crossed and inbred. Very small percentage can be proven from a catch location when you look at the overall picture. But they're are sources to get then from different location if one desires.
Carpintis do vary in color, spots/worms, and so on. In nature and captive bread. If you're dealing with a nice strain like Dan's Rio Hondos from COTA, and crossing it with a green texas/vontehillo strain with small spots I lose interest. If you're still calling it Rio Hondo than it's just dumb.
What is an electric blue? Sounds like a common name or advertisement used for H. Carpintis like Royal green terror.
RT/SRT is a whole different ball game. Purposely crossed and hybridized for certain traits. Creating a fish that doesn't exist naturally. I guess you're into it or your not.
