I picked this guy up from my lfs, was sold to me as a Texas, I'm hoping for a Carpintis, I really like the large pearl pattern on them when they reach adult hood, I know alot of local pet shops always mislable their stock,,,,,

Spotting in the face looks carpintis to me, coloration in the body looks more cyanoguttatus. I have had carpintis "Escondido" and "rio Hondo", and they both had consistent electric green spotting over the whole body. Possibly hybrid of the two species?

Thx for the info, very intreging, do you have any pic's of yours? How long did you keep them, & do you have any info on their overall demeanor?

The rio Hondo I had, I bought pretty recently (few months ago) at a very small size, only about an inch, and he died within a month for seemingly no reason. The other fish were fine, and I didn't notice anything strange about him, so no real idea why he passed. He was a very active little fish, ate well. Heres the only pic I took of him

My escondido, I grew from a similar size, to about 8". I ended up re-homing him and all my other fish because I went away to school and had to get rid of the tank. While I had him he was cool, held his own but didn't go out of his way to start problems in the tank. Their behavior reminds me of an amphilophus, but a more chilled-out version. I have heard stories of some people's being every bit as aggressive as a Midas, but that was not my experience with them.
Here's a pic of the carpintis, looks like he was around 6-7" at the time (this was years back)

Very cool, I definitely see the similarities, I'm a devoted Amph guy myself, but do enjoy most all South & American cichlids, will keep you updated,
