Here are some pics of a breeding pair - real striking breeding dress. I have four total but went through about 14. Very susceptible to stress bloat and (of course) very violent toward each other.

I was surprised by the amount of fry that I was able to snag - at least a couple hundred. I moved the group of four into a 100g long with some godmanni. Here are some pics in normal dress:

Nice breeding dress indeed. Sorry to hear of the initial losses, but you should more than make up for it I' sure. thanks for sharing.

Congratulations on the spawn. A wonderful species. Good luck with The rest of them.

Thanks - I moved the third spawn into a 5g. Here is the male in normal dress:

I have some Blue Labs from Taninul - same fish? different fish?

Mine are starting to act like they're coming of age to spawn. How far ahead of spawning did they change color?

Thanks,
Matt

I have did a bit of internet research on this a few years ago and found the link below to the Cichlid Room forum. Juan Miguel summarized the complex below back in 2008. I have not seen an updated summary since, but there may be a better , more current one - I have not really spent much time researching. My pantostictus was described as "Rio Panuco"- the Panuco river system has several named river tributaries, so my fish could be from any:

H. pantostictus
. lacustrine form; Mouth of the Panuco and northern lowland streams
. riverine form; Ríos Tampaon, Moctezuma, Coy, Pujal , Valles (Blue labridens)
. riverine form; Rio El Salto (Green labridens)
. riverine form; Rio Venados, lago Azteca (Caramel labridens)
. riverine form; Río Tamesi, Guayalejo and affluents (Red spotted labridens)

http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3714

So I think the blue labridens and pantostictus are considered the same fiish with the first considered riverine and the second lacustrine. The blotch behind the pectoral fins may be an indicator - I read a post from Mo Devlin where he reported the blotch is red for pantostictus (lacustrine) and purple for the blue labridens (riverine). I believe mine may be lacustrine since the blotch appears to be red and the body type is not as elongated - that said, the female's body type appears to be elongated so its difficult to say. Regardless, I really love this fish.

Do you have some info on this fish? Its hard to sort this out.

Forgot to answer this. It was within 24-36 hours of spawning that the female started rockin' the ninja colors. The male's dress changed within a matter of a few hours of spawning, or so it seemed.
