Anyone have any experience with this fish? I'm thinking about picking up some. All i know is that they grow to about 8-10 inches. The pics i've seen are really cool but i'm looking for a fish thats only mildly aggressive. Anyone have this fish?
They are middle of the road aggressive and very very very very susceptible to bloat...spirulina based foods only....spirulina flakes and soft pellets.
In addition, water quality is very important...Personally, I think weekly water changes are a must for these guys.
imo, bloat in New World's (CA's particularly) is caused more by overfeeding and even more importantly water quality. not only keeping the water clean but making sure it is well oxygenated. a lot of the species reported to be susceptible to bloat (haitiensis, beani, istlanum, a couple Herichthys) are all mostly found in very fast moving waters (rivers and streams). these rivers and streams where these fish are found are going to be very oxygen rich and a lot of times this isn't provided for them in an aquarium. I have juvie haitiensis and this is my second attempt with them. the first time I had them they were dead within 2 weeks. I've had these guys longer and they've been doing fine. I also haven't been picky about what I feed them, but I do have really good filtration on the tank (AC 300 on a 30 gallon) as well as a very strong powerhead. I'd have 2 powerheads on the tank if I had another outlet free but atm I don't. these guys are doing just fine...so far.
Also, just a couple weeks ago I was fortunate enough to hear a presentation by Rusty Wessel on the Panuco Basin in Mexico where most of the labridens types are found and this includes the sp. turquoise. he never mentioned anything about them needing a specialized diet. I also asked him once about haitiensis needing a specialized diet and he looked very confused. he said they were avid predators and piscivores in the wild and should be fine eating pretty much anything.
so all that said, I'd say feed a very well balanced, nutritious diet, provide lots of filtration and oxygenation into the tank and do regular water changes and they should be just fine.
