I was wondering what (and how big) the bigger hermit crabs are.

I have Land Hermit Crabs, and as they grow, they are growing out of the tiny and small shells that they came in, and since I'm not buying any more tinies or smalls, I'll have a bunch of leftover shells with no use for them.

What I would like, is to find a marine hermit that will get as big as the land hermits (about the size of a softball) if not, are there any that get at least golf-ball sized?

There are definitely some large ones in SW, but the biggest I have seen for sale was about the size of an orange.

Thanks for giving me hope, wurm!! lol

you wouldn't happen to remember what species it was by any chance? We only get the lil'bitty blue legs and dwarves around here, but, I need something that'll use the old shells I have kicking around.

Is it red with white spots?? If it's a white spotted hermit crab (caption next to pic) what size tank would I need for it? And it'd really have to be on it's own? That sucks.... :(

I guess I'm used to the LHCs, who are VERY gregarious, even to the point of sleeping in huuuge piles!!

I caught a hermit in corpus christi that had a shell as big as a softball and he was pretty friggin big himself.

Dunno what species it was though. They're all over the shallow areas of the bay down there. Not quite as big as the one in ewurms link and not the same species, I'll have to look it up.
