I just bought two wild caught Heros Notatus today
and i am not really sure if i had picked out a pair.
The Guy from the lfs did not really had a clue about the differences.
They had a Group if 8 .
Some where 100% males and some looked like females.
Also i would like to know how my chances are to get a bonded pair when they can not choose each other by themselfes?

Nice fish bro, I have a group of notatus as well. I don't know how to sex them either but I have 2 with spangles all over the body and 2 without any at all. Makes me believe the spangled ones are males and non spangles females hopefully an expert can chime in

Thank you.
I would say you have a male and a female.
Hopefully some of the experts will chime in.
When my fishes are two males i guess they would fight?

After seeing more closely it looks like 2 males maybe the first one more dominant
Bc my females have no spangles what so ever and my males do all over
Maybe trade the second one in for a female that has no spangles ?

I can trade one when i have two males.
Its no Problem.
But its very hard to tell when you look at the group
which one is a female.
We had catched a few and thought that this is the one that looks the most like a female.
When i look very close at the females from ryansmith83 there are a few little spangles at the gills too.
I will see how everything is going and than i decide what to do.
They are i my tank since two days.

My females have no spangles they look like Ryan's they have more of like an emerald green shimmer to them
Good luck with yours hopefully you have a pair
