Is the yellowish color very common in Severums like the ones pictured here? They just got here & will get much better looking after they settle in, but I like their foundation coloring!

Hmmmm ... H. severus isn't found anywhere near Manaus. If the location is right it would be a green, but they might just be listing the shipping point and not the collection point (this happens a lot).

The exporters stock list has Manaus listed as the origin & the collection area is blank, so you may be right. I just e-mailed to see if he knows the collection point or can find out... I want to see what he says. I'll let you know.

looks gud

These are Heros severus - male and female in that order. Nevertheless, yours are very good looking severums.

There isn't an H. severus in that tank. The big blue one does look like the potentially undescribed turquoise-colored species from Manaus: http://www.amazon-exotic-import.de/Gallerie/Cichliden/Seiten/Heros%20spec.%20Turqoise%20Manaus.htm

I'm sure you know more than me. My ignorance is evident by my post"s original question. But the exporter in brazil had these listed on his stocklist as heros serverus. That exporter has been in business for 3 generations exporting amazonia pesces. So I tend to believe they are heros severus. I hope others chime in on this.

Heros severus is what all severums were labeled as years ago. It was a common name, just as all festivums were called Mesonauta festivus. Those names are inaccurate. Heros severus is the true mouthbrooding severum as seen in Jim's pictures above. Here is one of my female H. severus:

As you can see, H. severus has no facial striping but instead freckles or spots, and they have orange-red horizontal lines across their flanks rather than blue/green ones. In fact, there is no blue/green on H. severus except as an iridescent sheen in the fins and sometimes as a sheen on the gill/face.

The fish in your pictures appear to be a green-type severum, so Heros cf. efasciatus. As I mentioned before, there is a supposedly undescribed severum that is mostly blue from Manaus and the large males in your picture appear to be similar to those.

Well I got my reply from the exporter. He says he thinks there is a mix of heros severus & heros efasciatus. They were collected in Rio Agapo Acu.
