I've trolled around the threads on this site off and on for a while now and decided that it's probably about time I signed up. I am about to move into my first house in a month and decided that a dog would require too much care with school and work, but a couple fish should do just the trick! I've owned many fresh water fish in the past and know the basics, but I'm going to do my best to learn the ropes around here before buying anything more exotic.

The fish that I'm looking at are the red tail barracuda. I've read up a bit on maintaining them, but still want to make sure I get their home down perfectly before diving into the responsibility. Any advice would be great on maintaining these fish!

The tank I own right now is a 55 gal. and I have a pump, but it's old and I think I need an upgrade. So far I've read that these fish need a bit of a current to stay active and lots of oxygen, but I was just wondering what you all think the best route would be to go.

Thanks!

Ryan

100g minimum for one. Fast fish, fast growing aggressive characin. That fish will be 18" in no time. As babies you miht get away with three or four but like I said...they grow fast.

100g? Really? Everywhere I've read said that you can get 2 in a 50g tank with no problems. Aren't there different species of the red tails that only get to be like 7" long? Here's one of the sites I read up on: http://www.aqua-fish.net/show.php?h=redtailbarracuda

I found another site that offered small, medium, and large red tails. Thanks for the response!

What do you think the best type of filtration system would be for these guys?
