Hey all, I'm fairly new to Piranhas but have been keeping cichlids for a few years now. I have a spare 55g and was wondering if that is enough space for 3 RBP's for life, or if I should sell it and find a 75 if at all possible.

I have a Rena FilStar sitting around (xp4 model) so filtration wont be an issue. Let me know what you guys think,

Alright thanks. If I can't get my hands on a 75 is a 55 suitable? and for how long, someone locally is giving away 3 that are about 2.5 inches.

I would say a 55 is fine for maybe a year or more. Get a 75 and get 4. They will grow to 5-6" pretty fast and slow down a little. I had 5, biggest being 9" in a 75 and water quality was top notch, no crowding. Water changes, water changes, water changes.

If you want 5 in a 75g get 3-4 first. If you get perfect water quality, try one more.

i would go for at least a 100. 5 can be pushing it in a 75 when they grow. I had 6 before in a 100 now their down to 5 guess you never really know their behavior to each other.

I agree with the others, they should be fine for a year or more in a 55, but you'll definitely want to upgrade. It sounded like you had a choice right off the bat & if that's the case always go for the bigger tank! ;)

About your filtration, I would do more than run 1 rena canister filter.. I suggest canister and bio-wheels on aqauriums. Good luck.

I had 5 reds in a 75g for about a year then moved them to a 150g and added 3 more... I had no problems with aggression in the 75, but there is always a possibilty.. Keep us updated, and with pictures!
