Hey...my names Neil...im new to MFK....to call monster fish ive got...an asiatic knife fish....a BGKF...2 senegal bichirs...an ornate bichir....and a really nice tire-track eel...
ive been thinking for some time now about getting a gar...elevating me to that awesome height.. :D...so i need a leetle help...
first of all...im abit confused...should i get a florida gar or a couple of needle nose gars?....im getting a 5x3x2 tank really soon....and i intend on shoving the knife fish...the tire track and the gars into it....
so..temme...should i get the florida gar or the needle noses...?
any other advice will be really appreciated....
thanks guys..

PS-im from India...so the needle nose will be really cheap....native fish...
the florida gar will cost me quite a few bucks...
besides these ive got 2 native tanks...with Zebra danios..Hara hara...Hara jerdoni...dwarf gouramis....Puntius denisonni
and another 2 large-ish tanks that hold my knife fishes and the bichirs..

Needlefish are not true gar, and will not get as big as any species of true gar. I would say they would be out of the question with the tankmates you have for them. I would go with the Florida's in your case and your tank has a nice width for them as well. How big are your bichirs and knifefish that you intend on putting the gar in with? Gar are predators and could likely make a nice snack out of these fish if they were too small.
oh, and welcome to MFK!

a side note, if your lil gar goes into a 5' tank it might(and would probably) panick, smash itself against the tank wall and break it's back..

this is hard to determine as the size of the gar was never stated. a 12"+ gar would be just fin in a 5' tank in my opinion. the gar could likely out grow the 5' tank though.

that aside, would it be fine in a 6' by 3' for life?

is it 3 feet wide or 3 feet tall if wide you could try a gar get a spotted or a florida there one of the smallest but you may need a longer tank if the tank is three feet wide thats great but the clown knife and gar will need a tank atleast 6 feet long when adults but 7 feet long would be nice but bigger is allways better
i would be carefull about the needlenose gars like said before there not true gars and don't get very big so a adult 12'' needle nose gar might be in trouble if its liveing with a 30''+ clown knife

for a florida/spotted that should last a long time...possibly for life. at 16-18 inches they almost seem to stop growing.

hey...thanks a lot guys...really appreciate it....
okay...the needle nose that are available right now are about 3" long....really tiny....and from what i hear they dont grow more than a foot or so long...so i guess they should be fine in a 5x3x2 tank....
also...my knife fish is about 9" long right now...he's gonna get his own tank soon...so dont need to bother about him...the BGKF is gonna go to a friend of mine....
the bichirs are all about 6"-7" long....
any other info on the needle nosed gars will be awesome..
cheers!

needlefish are not "true gar"....they grow to about a foot and are hard to train off of live feeders.

they also do best in groups of 3 or more and prefer some top cover...such as floating plants.
