Ive been over at Aquaria Central for a while, really dig that site! Thought I'd sign up over here. Right now Im in the process of building a 8'x 2' x2' plywood tank with my son. We are thinking 2 peacock bass, a couple of oscars and some sort of catfish that wont get too massive, i.e. redtails get too big, although thety are beautiful. Any input on this would be beneficial. The filtration will be a combination of 2 emporer 400's, magnum 350 canister, and a DIY sump/trickle filter made from the plastic drawer setup. Ive seen someone cut a ton of plastic straws over bio-balls.
Here's the link to our build constructive critism is always welcome, but if there's critism, please give a possible solution.

Welcome to MFK =).. that sound like a very nice tank you are going to build there =) ..
GOOD LUCK on it =)

Welcome! and hopefully you will enjoy this site just as much, but im sure you will enjoy it much more then the other one! Monster > Little Fish

As for Filtration: Using straws is not bad, it really all about what are you willing to pay? Basically you just need to provide a surface that the beneficial bacteria can bind onto and live and do the dirty work. Best substitution that most people use are pot scrubbers, but make sure you get ones that don't contain any chemicals. As for catfish i would suggest maybe a Stripped Raphael they don't grow to big but you may not see him for weeks so thats something that you may want to take into acct.

Thanks I'll keep that in mind about the pot scrubbers.

Thanks for the warm and fuzzies. Im sure, Im gonna enjoy this site as well.
