i have a tank which is 3 by 1.5 feet... i want to get bichirs... they are 4-5 inches... the shop has albino sengalus and black bichir... albinos grow 1 feet... the black is also said to be grown one feet by the aquarium... just dont kno how many of them wuld fit my tank.... i m thinking of gettin 2 albino and one black... is it too much?? hw long can i keep them in my tank?

Hey! Are the black ones also sens? If yes, I think you can squeeze the three in. But still it depends on what other tankmates they will have. Not sure what others would say but they dont seem to grow to about a foot in aquariums. 8-10" is a more realistic size. I have two sens that are over two years old now. One is a female at 9" and the other is a 7" male.

The black bichir would be a senegalus. I've seen some in our local LFS, somehow they would be fit in that tank. But I think a larger tank would be a must, if you do want to add some tankmates which has a high probability that you're gonna do it in the near future you would need a serious filtration for the said tank. BTW if you're new to the hobby pls read this stuff...

If you don't plan to upgrade to a larger tank in the future I would probably stick to the albino ones (I'd say 2-3). They don't typically get as large because of their poor genetics. The senegals are typically larger and are very active; I have a store bought, captive bred 9 inch female who is *always* cruising around. She'd be pretty cramped in a 3 ft long tank. But if you have plans for an upgrade by all means get a few! They should be comfortable in that tank for quite a while.

Assuming the black ones are senegalus then i would recommend keeping 2-3 3 being the very most. IMO i wouldn't do 3 (unless you plan on upgrading) because that would just be cramming them in there. I would stay at 2 because that gives them enough room to live happily. Before you buy the "black" polypterus try and get a pic and post it on here so we can id it. I'd hate for you to buy an endli and 6 months later you have whats supposed to be a 8" or so fish at 16". Anyway try and id the black one before you buy it, although it will most likely be senegal (better safe then srry)

thank you guys.... so it would be best for me to keep albinos only? but could i add some other fish to make my tank? here is the black one... it is 11 inches... untitled.JPG

and for now i have no fish in the tank.... deco includes a small driftwood, and a plant

the front one? it's a senegalus. You don't want to have that crammed in into your tank right now, I'd say go for 75G, that's pretty minimum for ya. You could make a sump out of your tank right now.

That looks like a Senegal to me; but at 11 inches I honestly wouldn't add it to your tank. They are active and a 3ft tank would be pretty cramped. You could add other fish; just make sure you have adequate filtration and realize anything that can fit in a bichir mouth will eventually end up there lol.

haha the one which i m gettin is only 5-6 inches... this is a big bichir which the shop has.... thnx and i have decided to get the albino ones... they are $11 a pair...
