Feeder Fish
heyo folks. i was pointed to this forum by two friends who said you all might be able to assist me.

see, i just had a monster sized fish (a catfish, i believe? about a foot long and apparently ten years old) dumped on me. it's currently dwelling in a bucket near the radiator (to keep the water warm) and has a bubblestone in the bucket to help it breathe.

i have a 30 gallon tank, but it's in severe need of a deep clean and i don't have the funds to sink into setting it up just yet. the catfish(?) used to live in a 30 gallon, but is now too large for it.

i need help identifying the poor guy so that i can either set about gathering gear to set up a home or re-home him.

which subforum should i use?

here's the best photo possible of the fish. i lost my camera (we recently moved) and all i really have is a droid. plus, his water is pretty murky.

oh, i neglected to mention this. the person who dumped him on us has told me he's ten years old. i'm not sure if that helps at all in the identification process.

his dorsal fin is very high and has kind of a frilly look to the edge of it.

I cant tell what the fish is but I have been in your situation before. I have found that rubber maid/sterilite storage containers work pretty well for temporary housing in a pinch. Doubling up the containers or taping the sides can help give it support. Just make sure to pay attention as you fill them up so the sides dont bend out too much. Hope that helps some. Good luck bro. :)

thanks, red! i might have to try that. i hate to think he'll be living in a plastic box, but it beats the bucket for now.

i know he's not a cory cat, and not a red-tailed cat either. the nearest i've found to what it looks like is a Synodontis Eupterus, but i'm not sure if that's what this fella is or just a relative of what he is. He hasn't got any spots that i can see, but again, the water is quite murky in his bucket.

thank you guys so much for your help. eyes are, of course, better than a phone camera - his fin looks exactly like the featherfin squeaker to me. unfortunately i'd have to prod him to get him to show it off on camera, and i don't want to further complicate his already cramped life in the bucket.

i posted to the marketplace hoping to get him a good home, since i really don't have the resources to devote to building him a tank right now. i wasn't informed he was coming - the moving van with our old stuff from New Jersey arrived, and surprise! he was in a bucket in the back.

According to the pic the closest thing I got from it is the goonch but I believe it may be part of the Bagarius species. However, if it's ten yrs old and only that size. It's more likely to be the lil one of the species the Bagarius Bagarius or the Bagarius Suchus they get from 8-28" so about a 1-2ft. I doubt it's the Bagarius Rutilus or Bagarius Yarelli which gets to about 4 -5ft plus.

Upon closer observation of the picture it could be a marbled pim too. But dunno depends on pattern. If the's striped it's probably a bagarius if it's marbled it's a marbled pim. My guesses anyways. Get a better picture to hellp us help you.
