Hi! I am Dave. My wife and I recently purchased a very tired tropical fish farm in the Tampa area. I have been trying to revitalize it and get fish going. Part of the process is cleaning ponds. In one pond I found 20 - 12 to 18 plus inch Pacus! They must have been there for years as this farm has not been active for a long time. I found this site as part of researching Pacu. They obviously did not breed in that pond as there are only 20. It was not a good pond for them I think as it had very little vegitation and very low ph. I salvaged them and they are now in several 175 gallon vats. I'm trying to decide whether to move them to another pond and try to breed them. Nice fish but niot the kind I had planned to breed.

Honestly, I wouldn't breed them unless you're planning on growing and using them for food fish. Fishkeepers are already overrun with ones that other fishkeepers buy without researching first! Personally, I've taken two, and am about to take a third, but I'm done after that... It's hard finding a home for a fish who grows to three feet in length! Not to mention that they only sell for a few dollars in the LFS, so the supplier can't be making that much off of them. Also, and I just thought of this, it might be difficult to competitively price them, since I'm pretty sure all, if not most, of the ones available are wild-caught.

Edit: Ever thought about breeding rays?

View attachment 405500Welcome Dave to MFK.. and great task and project ahead of you.. good luck ..sounds like alot of fun and certainly interesting along with the hard work... i had pacus.. they love carrots and zuchnini slices ..they are a great fish.. i agree though there are enough pacu in the LFS that are being sold without honesty being told to the purchaser in regards to their rate of growth and the size tank they require... they are tank busters.. yet in my opinion they have one of the nicest sweetest personalities in a fish..the gentle giants... keep us posted on your project..pics would be nice too.. any questions just ask...

Hello and Welcome!

Please don't try to breed those pacus... As has been said, no one that gets one in a pet store understand what they are getting. I have now taken in 2 of the beasts and they are costing me a fortune! Housing a 3' fish is not for amateurs.

Welcome!
