my wolf fish is about 18 months old and is 8". Over the last 3 weeks I have noticed slightly protruding scales similar to a case of dropsy but I am not seeing any reduction in appetite . Is there any chance the scales are like this in adult ery erys ? I would hate to lose this fish.

First check your water condition, has any changes last 3 weeks? Picture would have a lot so we can identify the problem before someone tell you to dump medicine into your tank, for scale verification that my old 4 years old Erys scale look smooth and shiny, fins/tail look quite thick in visual :P

Epsom salt can often help with fluid retention, but dropsy is often caused by mycobacteria. I hope yours isn't. If it is then you are looking at some strong antibiotics like kanamycin.

Post a better pic to see. Dropsy isn't commonly seen in ery ery. I think it effects the whole fish and not just the bottom. All the scales should be affected. It's an adult looking red so can be as they get bigger it will stretch out on the belly and the scales can look like this. Would hold on feedings and see if resolves or consider adding some Epsom salt if there's anything to suggest blockage/constipation.

How often are u feeding? What are u feeding? Tankmates? Water parameters? Can you get a better close up?

yes all scales are affected, not just the bottom ones (you just cant see them in the photo). Feeding crickets, super worms, silver sides etc. One feeding every two days. Tank mates are a small BN pleco, and a dozen tetra and rainbows. These are in a 40g. I will check water parameters tomorrow.
