Hi fin spotted pleco changed colors?????

This is what he started out looking like when I bought him. I put him in a tank with black sand substrate and now his body is black with almost no tan left to it. He had been in the tank for three moths now I thought maybe he was stressed but it hasn't gotten any better

yes, they do that.

Yeah, that's perfectly normal. He may do that less as he matures. Mine used go into camouflaged coloration whenever It would notice that I was in the room, and it wouldn't change back for hours, but now it usually just remains in its normal coloration (except during water changes and sometimes when I'm taking pics with an overhead flash).

Oh alright I've only ever had commons before so they are always mainly black from

Fish will change their body color to mimic their surroundings a bit better.
I changed my substrate from a bright almost-white sand to black and quickly noticed a difference in almost all of my fish, my ID shark turned from shiny silver to a dark dull grey, golden gourami who was completely yellow developed black tiger stripes, and my platies got darked and black spots on the tops of their heads.
