[FONT=&quot]Please tell me more about systems for large aquarium filtration. I have just gotten permission to have an aquarium in my apartment. I am considering a standard 220 gallon Amazonian, naturally planted biotope. Eventually I want to really play with much larger custom tanks in the ranges of 10,000 gallons.

My goals would be to maintain 1-4dh, 80 degree f to 88 degree f, 6.2 - 6.8 pH water.

My knowledge base may be somewhat old as I return to the hobby after a 15 year hiatus. I was thinking in terms of an effective filtration rate of 40 gpm for a 220 gallon tank. I would like to incorporate waste water bleed off feature of .005 gallons per minute replaced on the system return side with the same amount of RO filtered water.

My species interests are symphysodon, corydoris, otocinclus, brochis, and plecostomus. I have kept discus successfully in the past, but was fortunate in my area of southern California to have an incredible water source and balmy ambient daily temperatures. Here in Minnesota things are different and I am preparing for adjustments.

I hope to incorporate a certain level of automation to feeding, temperature and light control. Have considered fluidized bed filtration with a back up power source for the occasional power outages we experience. I am also researching in line sterilizers, heating systems and thermostats.

I intend to incorporate a custom sculpted tank insert to incorporate vertical egg laying sites and plant root receptacles. My plan is to incorporate a micro dose pump and tubing system to provide plant nutrients and possibly CO2 to the plant roots in the insert and bottom substrate.

As far as automation goes... The lights are easy to put on a timer, the tempature: if you get a digital heater(s) its just set and check when you do routine maintinence, Feeding can also beautomated but i find that the most rewarding part of fishkeepingis watching my fish eat so howerver you want to set that up is cool. On your decor you can do what you are planning to do with the sculpted insert with a LARGE piece of driftwood. You can lean slate and pots (spawning sites) on the sides and drill holes for plants. I hope this info can be of some use.

Thanks for the welcome! On the ground floor on cement slab over a basement laundry, but my apartment is directly over a load bearing wall. landlord says anything in the all glass or perfecto poduct line she has no problem with, bigger or with custom stands she want to see specs and run by her engineering group. Great person really knows her stuff and has a 29 nano with mandarins! If she was 30 years older i might have to marry her Ha! starting with a 220 is to get my knowlege base and habits back.

Anybody got a good recipe for beefheart disus suplement or is that Passe?

Any body got any experience making your own flakes using a home dehydrator?
