Hi everyone, I'm currently setting up a bigger tank for my pleco. I'm hoping 56 gal should be big enough for a while. Does anyone know if it is true that plecos will not grow too big for a tank (i.e., their environment)? There used to be a biology word for this that I can't recall, so if anyone knows the word please let me know cause it is driving me nuts that I can't remember it. I believe I learned it in grade school (a lot of years ago) so I don't even know if it has been disproven or what. Glad to be here!

nice another RI fish keeper!

Not true, well it depends what species plec you have.. if it's a common plec... that should be fine, but also depends if there will be other tanks mates.. alone I don't see a problem...

Hello and welcome to MFK!

Not sure if "stunted" is the word you're looking for, but, that's what will happen if a fish is kept in a tank that's not large enough for his size or mannerisms. No, a Pleco won't grow so big that he compresses against the sides, but there are several health issues that will most likely insure a short life span.

Good to have you here!

:welcome: to MFK!

Common plecos do not have their place in a 55g. In my opinion, smaller species of plecos such as bristlenose are more appropriate. You will likely have more issues on the go just picking yourself fish that will easily outgrow the tank in a few months.
