Hi Y'all. My name is Ben, and I am a defense attorney in San Antonio, Texas. I have a 100 gallon freshwater with a 8" Cichlosoma Grammodes, 4 6" silver dollars, a large bala shark, a spotted pictus cat, a fat little striped cory cat, and a 13" pleco. The Grammodes has eaten several tankmates over the year plus that I've had it. I also have a 29 gallon saltwater tank that I'm upgrading to a 150 gallon (2 ft. x 4 ft. by 31" deep) tank. I already have the new tank and stand and a Fluval Fx5 filter, but haven't set the tank up yet. I am trying to decide what kind of heater and what kind of protein skimmer to get. I am interested in the Fluval E-300 heater, as I think a 300 watt would be sufficient for South Texas. Is the Fluval E-300 all that? I want a heater that will work well and not burn fish. I don't want an in-line heater that will burn out if my filter line ever gets clogged. Any suggestions? Also interested in a bigger skimmer. My SeaClone 100 is find for my 29 gallon, but probably is too small for the 150. I have a 6" dog-faced puffer, a green chromis and 2 pajama cardinals right now. I won't have a reef (as puffers eat all crustaceans,) but I want to have a few larger fish. Suggestions on an economical but adequate skimmer? I also would like to know whether industrial bagged sand will work in a saltwater tank (I would add my live sand to it.) Thanks for your input.
