hi guys, i posted other day about my tank having high reading on amonia, i did a 50% water change, and did another reading today, my ph is 6.0, nitrate is 0, my amonia is still 1.5, i can nip pets at home tonight, is there anything i could buy to make it alot better? live plants or anything??? new filter pads?? im a noobie, and im sorry for all these post im making, just dont want my rhom to die :( oh he's eating still which is a good sign, but he has clamped back fin
 
Your tank is cycling. You need to do a 50% water change every time the ammonia level is over 0.5. If that means 2x a day, then do 2 of them a day.

The ammonia will stay high for a week to 10 days. Then the nitrite will climb. Every time that level gets over 1ppm, do a 50% water change.


Feeding less during cycling will help keep the levels lower. It takes 6-8 weeks to cycle a tank.

prime removes or detoxifies amonia. whatever you do, don't replace the filter pads. if you have a friend with an established tank, see if you could borrow some of their filter media. go to your lfs (preferably the one that sold you the fish), tell them everything. actually, call them first. maybe they will give your fish a healthy place to stay while you cycle your tank.
