Hi. I got a free Pleco today. It's 8.5" long & chocolate.
It got dropped accidentally on the rug, when some one
transferred it to my large holding jar/bucket.
I mixed in some current tank water with air stone &
heater (10gal).

I think I need another heater. The pleco is in a
medium size bucket now & will be transferred to a 10 gal tank.
& later to a 55 or 85 gal tank.

8.5" pleco in a 10 gallon? Yes

My 85 gal is cold & has 2 goldfish under 4.5"
& a 3.5" koi. I think plecos like 75degrees.
& I only have 1 small heater ATM.

the pleco would be fine in colder temps. better alteast than a 10g. just my opinion

"i believe it is a real mistake for you to adopt that pleco if your largest tank is a 85gal."
I didn't know they needed that much room.
I can always give him away if it comes to that.
It looks tough & well fed, thick body.
Not the skinny runts you see in some LFS's.
I had 2 small plecs from the LFS's before & I think there wasn't
a lot of algae for them to eat in the tank. & I guess they didn't
like the algae wafers I gave them.

Good idea. What about the quarantine phase?
Thanks!

I can try to get some pics in a few days.

Plecos don't need too much room, but more than a 10g.

Coldish water is ok. I wouldn't go lower than 75g. They will eat algae, but it can be compared to you eating crackers for the rest of your life. I can tell you're new to plecos. We all start somewhere though. :) Try feeding slices of zuccini. Many or the hypostomus species love veggies. My common did, but I got rid of him.

Not going to flame you on the 10 gal. but try more than algae on the glass and wafers in the diet. The are easy to care for and will live quite a long time if housed properly. Good to see a save, but don't be so rash to get rid of it if you don't like it.

Hi . I noticed the tips of its pect fins are red with a wound.
Probably from being on the gravel a lot in its old tank?

It's spine can give you a nasty wound?
How do you pick up a big pleco like this?

He gets freaked out sometimes & bangs himself up in the tank.
Thanks
Here's its pics:
