They are very widespread in SA and their habitats vary greatly. The rivers are mostly quite muddy and murky, plus adult RTCs are deep water fishes where there is no light. Having said that, there are spots where water is relatively clear, like this spot on Xingu: http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=37086 ... this is shallow waters and plecos are the target mostly.

Sorry, not much help but I thought it's better than nothing. You can browse other threads in this directory (Traveler's notebook http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=26) and perhaps find more underwater shots or do a search on "underwater".

ever watch river monsters? the water they pull em out of looks like chocolate milk. prob not gonna get any underwater pics when visibility is under a foot

There was a TV documentary I saw once that was recording deep diving in the Amazon. The bottom was mostly featureless mud with the occassional log. No light at all, so no plant life. The water had near zero visability. Not a pretty tank idea.

Or just fake it and go "flooded forest" like every aquarium does.

Have you tried "Diving in Amazon", etc. on YouTube? Recently I saw a documentary piece where they dove in and filmed irwini catfish. I was reminded of that by Shipmonkey's description.

The Pantanal is part fo the Amazon basin, but has very little similarity with the main channels where the monster cats live. The Pantanal is a flood plain region. So it is shallow, heavily vegetated, extremely bright, and the water temps are on the high side.

as for its diet, as its habitat has been explained in full, I would breed some sort of cichlid that occurs in its natural range as a treat and use filet stuffed with a good carnivore pellet
