Hi, great absolutely beautiful birds.
Pics do no justice at all!

They've got lovely long tail feathers and cheep/chirp quite loudly.
I'm thinking of buying the pair so

How do I sex them?
Whats the best way to keep them healthy and happy?
What kind of food treats do they like?

I've got loads of questions so just let me have all the info you guys can spare.
By the way, they're in West Africa.

Thaaaaaanks!

They are African Ring-necked Parakeets, Psittacula krameri krameri. Both are male; females have faint or no 'collar' marking. I don't keep birds and can't tell you anything about their husbandry, but I know they (at least the Indian subspecies) are fairly common in the pet trade. Try asking at one of the bird-specific forums such as www.theperch.net for more info.

you can easily google them and get plenty of information.

make sure that they're friendly and hand reared, or you'll have a nightmare dealing with screaming and biting birds.

thanks so much for all the info guys!

really appreciate it all, I'm gonna go do some research and see.

thanks again, I'll keep you all updated!

Actually thats an Indian ringneck. I used to breed them.

Thats my site.. not updated very much, we don't have but a pair of doves, cockatiels and meyers...

Here are a few more pictures taken by a visitor.

There is an awesome site that I spent about 10 minutes looking for. It has info on all the asian species... it was a .nl domain I think.

Anyway you can read about them on my site.

thanks so much for the info.
I'll get right onto it...

If thats the cage definitely isnt safe they can ingest poison from the bar when they chew on them and they need some toys to destroy for fun.

I was tired when I first looked at them. Yeah that cage is no good for a parrot! I could not keep any of mine in a cage with those dinky bars, they would pop them off the welds.

These guys are big chewers for their size too. Even if they are hand-reared they can be turds, they need a lot of interaction from about 10 days to 2.5 months if you want a good pal. If not, you can have a bird that likes to be out, but not hang out!

If you want these as pets, make sure they step up for you. They can be fairly cage aggressive at certain ages. Get them out of the cage with a bar / stick before you try to handle them - until they get to know you :)

Good Luck!

A good diet, fresh water, a variety of toys and a nice sized cage can really effect their mood. Also different perch diameters are good too.

We have an African Grey that is a rescue bird. His wings and tail feathers were originally cut off horribly wrong, and we don't think his flight feathers ever grew back quite right. He can 'fly' down, sort of, and was originally in a small cage. We bought a new cage last weekend, and hung a pretty big toy that has rope and wood on it. He's visibly, and audibly ;), much happier. He plays and sings more, and gets more exercise climbing to his bowls in the cage. Their feet can get arthritis if they don't move or are always standing in the same place/on the same size of perch.
