Hi my name is Raul. I'm from San Diego CA. I'm not entirely new to fish keeping. Been keeping tanks now for around 8 years. Started out with community fish from Walmart then moved up to African Cichlids then went to Saltwater and Reef keeping. I am currently tank less at the moment due to an upgrade that was gonna happen that got stalled because of money and life issues. My empty tank that i have right is a 265 gallon glass tank 84x23x31. Was going to be a reef but now i'm not going to be able to set that up so i'm quitting my salt addiction and coming back to fresh. I never was able to keep any large freshwater fish in my past setups due to size of my aquariums. Now i know i can! Looking forward to seeing other setups and learning more about monster fish. Of course any advice is always appreciated.

Thanks,

Raul

welcome to mfk.....nice to meet you Raul.......... hope you enjoy mfk.. if you have any questions..just ask.........

Hey Raul I'm kind of in the same boat as u minus the 8years of experience ..i have a year more or less...what kind of freshwater fish were you plan on getting?

I really enjoyed my African Cichlid tanks i had. Was considering just doing those again. I always did like Frontosa tanks and was never able to get them with my other tanks. Still trying to decide. At the same time i would like some crazy big monster fish but i still don't know enough about big fish. Right now i'm just trying to finish building my stand and save for a large filter.

Ya I've always been a fan of DIY things. Build all the sumps for my reef tanks. Still don't know enough about sumps for freshwater tanks. I'm gonna be doing some research on here about that. On top of that i'm also gonna read up about tank turnover rates for freshwater tanks. I know they aren't as much as salt and reef tanks.

I'm a little scared to DIY projects what happens if it goes wrong ..ahhhh!! Idk that's me it might be cost effiecent but I'd be worried about quality I mean I kno it might be as easy as following directions for handy people but idk personally I couldn't take the risk but if you do buy a filter and get it
running let me know cause I plan on buying a 265-300g tank soon and don't know what kind of filter (brand/model) to get.

Sweet filter man! I've seen others talk about building those but haven't ever seen one in action. If i was going to buy something i wouldn't even know what filters would be good enough for a tank my size. I know i've seen some people use those Fluval FX5 filters on big tanks but those suckers run like 250+ brand new.

A lot people say fx5 is the best but everyone has a different view

For me a DIY is the better way to go ..but if you have money n no time to make it it might be better just buying one .....
When I get a 200+g ill just make another one n add more scrubbies( 10x) better than bio balls n more stuff n its easier to clean..
