hi i am new to all this! got a pond full of koi sleeping for winter so got bored and bought a marine tank! after only having it for three months decided it wasnt big enough so today bought a 3feet deep 2feet wide 5 foot long get it on saturday so cant wait to get it all set up ! its second hand and coming full of live rock and a few fish is it best to bottle the water in tank from the guy we have bought it from and reuse or just make up our own water ?? also can star fish carry whitespot?? got lots of questions because we so new to this.

welcome to mfk, i would use the water unless it is foul, you shoulda not leeped into the hobby that quick especially with that huge tank. you will have lots of fun with this, hope everything goes smoothly

I wouldn't bother taking the water myself, that's just too big a pain in the ass when getting a tank that large.

What I would do is put all the live rock in buckets or tubs and completely cover it with water from the tank. This way you will have as little die off as possible.
Other than that water I wouldn't bother bringing extra water.

Get the salinity and temperature on your new water matched to that of the water in the tank. Make sure to test the water on each with the same hydrometer or refractometer, otherwise you may not get an exact match.
If there are inverts or other creatures that use calcium also make sure to get the calcium up to the correct level.

No, a star fish doesn't carry ich, though I it might have some kind of infection that looks similar.

thanks for the tips,
my partner has kept freshwater fish for years having the biggest tank i have ever seen in my life! there was no kitchen when i moved in just a tank!! he had sharks and all sorts of wierd things! we have done research on saltwater berfore jumping in but think there is no better advice than talking to people that have done it for years!
my normal sized tank that we are getting rid of has had ich and all the fish are in qt but only by a few days is it safe to move my live rock, crabs, starfish and corals into my new tank this weekend or should they be put in separate qt?? i keep getting conflicting advice on this one x
