Hi, I am new to this forum and need some help as well. I have a well established65 gallon octagon tank with a large Albino Oscar, Flathead Catfish, Jack Dempsey, and an Alligator Gar. This tank is five years old and these fish have been through two moves, bad case of ick, and are doing wonderful. I feed them 50 comets about every couple weeks and they are gone by the next day. I love my fish but I have one fish in particular that I really want to have. I have a 150 gallon tank that I want a peacock bass in. I have tried several times to raise a peacock from a baby with no avail. I now have a ten gallon tank with a juvenile Redtail Catfish in it and I decided to buy another peacock..I bought two and the fist week they were doing great! They both were eating Rosies. Then the smaller one lost its color and died. All the other fish in the tank catfish, rosies, a comet or two, were and are fine. Until NOW!!!! My larger peacock has stopped eating and has lost his color and is very lethargic. He had a white spot on the tip of his lower jaw for a few days but that is gone now. but, he still will not eat and does not have his color back. His eyes are bright and fins are clean. What do I do? I desperately want to save my peacock. Oh, I did a 1/2 water change in the 10 gallon with water from my 65 gallon. Also, the tank is still fairly new. Please help!!!!!!!

First off, the internet is your friend but there are more things wrong here than can be answered in one post. I apologize if this comes off as harsh but this is a common issue on these boards and it is not a good situation for the fish. I'm sure others will jump in but I guess I'll be the first. If you don't know the adult sizes of your fish, this may be news. If your fish(gar and flathead) are really 5 years old and still physically fit in that 65 then you have most likely severely stunted your fish. Also, that rtc that you have in your ten gallon will, if cared for correctly, reach 2 feet long in less than 2 years. As for your water changes, the purpose of a water change is to remove the waste products from the tank. Does it make sense to transfer dirty water from your 65 to your 10? I would recommend googling the nitrogen cylcle and every fish you have to get a better idea of the care requirements for each species. Lastly, fish release a hormone which stunts their growth in a small tank, unfortunately their internal organs keep growing leading to a premature death. Your fish may be small length wise but that does not mean they are living a normal , healthy life.

Also, this topic should probably be in the general aquaria section. Hopefully a mod will notice this and move it for you.

hi mate. your gonna need a bigger tank. the alligator gar can reach 10ft and the rtc can hit at least 6ft. and is a fast grower. for those these fish, you need a large tropical pond. as for the p.bass, cut down on the feeders.

Bassfisher91 let me just be frank you apparently did not read my post in its entirety. I have a 150 gallon tank that all my fish are going into. So everyone that wants to school me on the size of my fish per tank I know how big my fish can get!!!!!!!!!!! I am from Cocoa, Florida and I have gigged my fare share of Alligator Gar in the St. Johns river so when I gig a 4ft gar off my dads airboat I think I know how big they can get. I also am about to be an Environmental Science w/ a Concentration in Fish and Wildlife Bachelors GRADUATE so I am not completely stupid as you have tried to make me out to be. However, this post brought up a conversation with my fiancée about the actual age off the fish. They were bought in the summer of 2009 which makes them 3 1/2 years old not 5. Also, they have been in the 65 gallon tank for about a year while I was having my 150 gallon repaired. Now it is finished and they are going back in there. As for my Red Tail he is only 4 inches long so since my 150 gallon is finished I think Ill be ok there too. This is why I dnt like this forum crap bc people on here cannot be descent and give friendly advice. Instead people want to think they know everything and try to make people feel like they are stupid. By trying to show their (EXPERTISE), lol...and telling people what they need to do instead of giving advise on what to try. As for my water change the ten gallon is a brand new tank with no bacteria at all so from everything I have ever studied the fish need some sort of established levels. So, can people who can actually help me with the Peacock that truly care to help and not degrade please feel free to respond. Otherwise, I have no problem with canceling registration in this forum and not have to deal with the added stress from people whom have nothing else better in their lives than to degrade people they dnt even know. Oh, n pmjumbo thank you for your response it was greatly helpful, the ammonia was out of wack extremely with the tank being new and all. You truly helped.

You are 100% right about most people on this group lol and your welcome I had the same problem with my oscars before and someone told me to check my ammonia levels, I jus try and look out for fellow hobbyists, please do let me know how the little guy progresses

dude. Please calm down. I mean no offence. if I thought you were stupid, I would've said so. as I said. cut down on the feeders. that might help. as for the size of the fish, I was simply stating a fact. im not I insulting your knowledge or anything. im still learning things myself and so im not in any position to insult others. :) all the best
