What type of hiding spot should I get for my CK? I don't want to get one of the "ghost-hides" or whatever the LFS calls them. Does it need to be plastic like PVC, or will a clay tube/pipe be better? Does it matter at all? Just wondering if the PVC will make them feel safer by blocking out more of the electrical "noise" that CKs are ~sensitive to.

CKs do not have EDO like most SA Species that you see commonly on sale. They are amush predators and need something that will be an actual cover (not a ghost house). PVC is fine or a driftwood with a high arch for it to hide under.

yeah CK's don't have electricity (x2) so insulation doesn't matter. What I did find when I designed the tank for Carlo (my CK) and subsequently put him in it, is that it is important that the space not be too big. I didn't think about this before, but luckily there were plenty of spots. His favorite place and by far my favorite thing to put in an aquarium is a hollow log. A good hollow log though is hard to find, but if you can find one, put it in! Wood is soft and secure, and the log I used wasn't very big (its' treated grapevine, a very thick piece with a hole in the middle). Carlo seems to like small places that have soft edges (they have skin and not scales so theres a concern there), that he can rest in, just wider than his shoulders. They aren't like a cichlid in that they would rather slide between two pieces of slate than go into a flowerpot for a house. He's since outgrown his log and moved into a tunnel I made by covering a fat piece of PVC with rocks/wood and sand (Makes sort of a mountain with a tunnel going through the middle), but I don't get the sense that he feels as secure in this tunnel as he did in the log. he spends a lot of time being lazy in the tunnel though so he's got to like it a little. Anyways, that's what I've noticed. A good hollow log is always the best option IME but they're hard to find or expensive.

Mine outgrew his hide, at 19 inches, so now he has none, not for the last 2 years, however, if there is a blade of grass in front of him ,he will sit behind it and pretend that he is hiding, very funny!
