Hello all I am new to the site as of today because I have a question for you all. I have a jack dempsy and a pike in a tank, but my trouble is they always hide. I took everything out in hopes that they would come out, however later read that if they have more shelter they will be more comfortable and come out. Yesterday I added a ton of shelter but they still hide. It may be too warm in the tank seeing as we dont have a/c and its hotter than hell... any ideas guys? all help welcome.

Thanks

I have had them for 2 years now, however i just moved them from back home in a 30 gallon tank over the summer (i know its small but all i had) into a 55 gallon in school.. and it does appear that they come out more when i am away, and the jack dempsy likes the cave i built for her, the pike really bothers me because he hides in a log like structure that he hid in back home and i NEVER see him :(

I'm havin the same problem bro, had my JD's for a week now, ppl say it just takes time...Ima give it time, but im one impatient mofo so idk how long I can take it lol. I was wondering if a GT would be less skittish, as I'm devoting my entire 55 myself to a pair of JDs, and I don't want some scared fish ruining the time I put into my tank just b/c it gets big and hides all day...lamefest.

You can start by giving your fish an adequate home. After that, then we can discuss shyness issues.
Warm in the tank? You dont have a temp gauge and heater? Jeez. Poor guys.

i have a heater but how the heck do u recommend i cool it down? As for an attiquite home 27 gal each is more than plenty for the two of them.

if you run an open-top setup, you can cool the tank with fans . . . the open-top also allows the tank water to evaporate, which keeps the tank cooler

to keep the fish from jumping out, you can make a tank cover out of plastic lighting panels (also called "egg-crate" panels) from a hardware store

your 55G is not "plenty", but it might be adequate I suppose . . . at any rate, it is what you have . . . I suggest you continue to allow the fish to have some caves and hiding places, but also be sure to leave swimming lanes, especially for the pike

one question: how bright is your lighting? it is too bright, the fish might be uncomfortable and that is why they are hiding . . .

JD are known to be shy and skittish but once they get used to the tank and surrounding they usuallu come out. He needs a bigger tank, he could feel cramped if he is 2 years old.
