IN YOUR HEAD
my 12" ornate is always hiding in the amazon sword forest. i hardly ever see it. its fins are pirfict so it isn't getting picked on, it may be the one picking on my other bichirs as their fins are nipped. i don't get it. it used to chill alone under the fx5 intake, but latly it has gone into the forest. it comes out only after dark. anyone else seen this hiding done at this size? when should it stop?

From what I've seen and read, ornates tend to be shy during the day especially as they get older. It probably just wants it's solitude. Mine is around 8" and is starting to do the same, preferring to hide more during the day than it used to when it was smaller.

i have had mine since the 3" mark and it was way more active then compared to now. i did manage to get a few pics just now of it so i may do an update thread on the bichirs.

my 6" was anti-social and always hides at the right back corner of the aquarium

My 3 are always out and about, they are the most active by miles.

the bigger it gets the less you will see them. mine is 12" and i was afraid it wasn't eating but keeps growing so chances are im wrong

I don't know if it's that it will become more active so much as hoping to see when it's active. I'm sure it's pretty active after the lights go out or when no one is around. I wouldn't worry or be concerned, it's just part of their life. They are mostly nocturnal after all.

How big are your ornates spwd? and how much cover is in your tank?
