My RD is a bit flighty but that might change, so this thread could be for noting. I will ask anyways.

How can i get a hiding spot for a foot long fish that doesnt take up a huge amount of space? Flowerpots are great but by the time the are big enough the are huge at the opening end... Ive seen ceramic pipe but i ant find any large enough.

He is 5" tall and 11" long

get two 6" diameter PVC pipe T-junctions from Home Depot or Lowe's or whatever and go find yourself a nice long, wide flat rock from your local stream/river/lake bed or quarry or wherever near you has rocks , a clean source, no chemicals of course.....then you take them and put them in a container they can be fully submerged and boil a big pot of water.

Then you take the pot of water and pour it into the container w/ the rocks and pipes to sterilize it, let the water cool, and remove, rinse and build your cave. You can pre-set them before putting them in the tank w/ aquarium silicone if you want.....simply use the 2 pipes as a base - cover the tops with silicone, place the big rock on top and 48 hours later as long as it is cured and smell is gone, give a quick rinse and put it in the tank.

Alernate method for sterilizing - a bucket w/ 3% bleach, 97% water solution can be used to scrub everything down, afterwards, rinse for several minutes until ALL SMELL of bleach is gone, then set them in a bucket of water with dechlorinator for a few hours, rinse again and place in tank or pre-set. Allow to AIR DRY before using.

Alternate method #2 - (not the most direct or effective) scrub or soak everything down with WHITE VINEGAR , allow time to sit, then rinse for a few minutes and proceed as above

Questions?

He doesn't need a hiding place, His tank mates if any need a hiding spot, lol
But they won't need to use them NEARLY as much if the RD has one that's "HIS". Think of a big male pitbull and HIS chew-toy. He'll spend more time in the damn cave then he will the rest of the tank.....it's like you sitting in your favorite chair. They'll also be more responsive to people as a result of having a "happy safe-place"...........just like that big pit's cage should feel like to him - not like he's being punished - it's HIS spot and only his.....he'll be like "This is MY house, GTFO!!!"
He's a beast why is he being such a wimp lol he's a devil
All my Amphs were shy from the start or after moving, weren't yours? The manfish-cave will change all that. Trust me, Devils love caves as much as JDs, just no one ever takes the time to make one for a fish that size except me :P My little psycho just started taking over a month ago....I got her in Dec. @ 4"

None of mine were lol crazy from the get go. Also about a few hundred been bred by me that I've sold and all were far from shy lol

I added a 20$ pot for my 15.5" Midas and that ass never used it lol he still couldn't properly get in there he's super long

yea, but how long were they housed with siblings? I mean dude....in a world (tank) full of Amphs, it's a savage life until you find a home.....adapt or die, which usually means "get nasty or get ghosted". I guess 5-7" is puberty for these guys, right?

Also, 15.5" is a Midas/RD most people will never see. My 10" female loved her oversized strawberry planters and my 7" loves her caves now....now the white Midas just had a tank w/ gravel, but he was a different story....

I have went to a local florist nursery & found some large pieces of slate to make a cave, I layed them side by side never glued them with aquarium safe epoxy, but it served the job, best idea I could come up with, with such a large homemade cave

My female started breeding at a very young size about 6" and my male was double at that time.

They were with parents for a while I had about 20 batches I would grow them to an inch or two and put them back with parents to grow out quick and sell them and let the cycle begin again.

My F1 male 15.5" Midas got so big because I bought him at 11-12" and grew very slowly over the next 6-7 years to 15.5" where I eventually sold him.

He killed off about 8 monsters in my tank when he started breeding. I thought I had some plague in my tank then I saw the female with eggs hiding lom

I never used the silicone either, but I still suggest it for people worried about broken tanks....like J jaws7777 ;)
