My tank has a giant piece of driftwood and there are no hiding areas. Are hiding spots necessary for the black ghost knife and fire eel?

It's necessary for these fish to feel secure, in nature many fish spend the days holed up in nooks and crannies till night falls and it's safer!

In the wild, most fish have evolved as prey food to other fish, birds, turtles, etc., so instinct is to have an option of hiding or escaping from time to time. Varies from species to species, but the closer the tank is to their natural habitat, the more secure they'll feel.
