I have just tested my water and it has 4mg/l of ammonia. I know this is dangerous to fish which is why I have taken my poor green spotted puffer back to the fish shop. :(

In the mean time I have bought some Ammo lock.

Does anyone know what effect this will have on the water other than reducing the level of ammonia? i.e negative side effects

Probably have chloramines. If you add chloramine remover your tap water will test high for ammonia but it is safe to add fish of you add prime or ammo lock to bind up the free ammonia. Your test kits will still test for ammonia but just ignore it because it is safe

Is your tank cycled?
Water changes and Prime will keep the ammonia level down until it has fully cycled.

I thought it had cycled and I even had the water tested in the shop and they said it was safe to introduce fish. I put in 3 mollies, a plec and a a green spotted puffer.

I checked the water last night and ammonia and nitrite levels had soared!! My poor fish! I had to take the puffer back because he was on deaths doorstep. they said they will be able to bring him back up to good health.

The mollies and the plec are pretty robust and can deal with the tank as it is at the moment.

I added a product called 'Liquid Filter - Colombo' which reduces ammonia levels in the tank. They told me it was the equivalent to 'Ammo Lock' but will not give a 'fake' ammonia reading in the test kits. I added it about 2 hours ago, took an ammonia reading and it is still coming up as the same dangerous levels.

How did you cycle the tank? Check for Nitrate. If no Nitrate, then not cycled.

You added too many fish to the tank at once. The waste overloaded the Beneficial Bacteria in your tank (thus ammo spike).

Only things you can do are water changes EVERYDAY, and try to keep ammonia below 1 ppm. Your BB will eventually populate and get the ammonia down. As a water conditioner, I like Prime, because it's so concentrated and takes everything out of the water (or neutralizes it).

Good luck and keep us updated. :headbang2:headbang2:headbang2

Thanks for the advice. Im just about to do another water change.

I'll keep you informed.

My tank looks terrible now. The ammo lock stuff has made the tank very cloudy. apparently it will clear in a day or so. fingers crossed.
