I just bought a kill-a-watt. How do you add up the power consumption using KAW ? Do you take measurement by pressing KW/H over 24 hours span and use that figure and multiply by 24 hours in a day and 30 days in a month ?

Here's my problem...

I have 4 tanks running currently

240 Gallon freshwater
Mag 12 - 110 watts
Koralia 4 - 12 Watts
MJ1200 x 2 - 40 watts
Brothers - 300 Watts heater
2 Air pump - 10 watts total
Natural sunlight

75 Gallon Reef
Ocean Runner - 38 watts
KOralia 3 - 10 watts
MJ1200 - 20 watts
Sedra 2500 Skimmer - 35 watts
Fuge Light - 6 watts
4 x 54 watts T5 running 6 hours a day

20 Gallon Nano
Quiet One 1200 - 25 watts
MJ1200 for Aqua C remora - 20 Watts
Tunze 6025 - 6 watts
Koralia Nano - 3.5 watts
Coralife 96 watts 50/50 PC - 96 watts running 6 hours a day
Fuge Light - 8 Watts

10 Gallon QT tank
Aquaclear 110 - 14 watts
MJ1200 for CPR Back Pak - 20 Watts

Mitsubishi DLP tv running 5-6 hours per day at 250 watts and 6 watts on stand by mode

I have ran AC and Heater a total of 4 days this month since the weather have been really really nice outside, keeping my house temp at 70-74 degrees.

De-humidifier running half a day at the most ( I set it to where relative humidity at constant 50%) 80 watts...

This is all on a 1 bedroom apartment and my bills have been ranging from $ 150- $ 185 since the beginning of fall season.

Of course, I do laundry once a week and normal usage, but I never have a $ 185 electricity bill in the last 12 years I have been on my own. At any given time, I always have 1- 2 tanks from 40-75 gallon. But the 240 freshwater shouldn't use that much electricity...

Something fishy :nilly:to you ?

call and see if they estimated it, or if they're making up for other estimations.

You should feel happy....our last electricity bill was just shy of $500.00

I feel your pain on the $ 500 electricity bill...but I assume you are in a house and I noticed you have a lot of tanks.

I only have a 240, 75, 20 and a 10 gallon in a 1 bedroom apartment. With Avg temp of 67 degrees, I have only turn the AC/Heater for 4 days this month.

I was expecting around $ 100 to $ 120 based on a 13.22 cents per KWH

I cut down a bit on the extra filtration...light intervals...ect last month and it still went up so they are checking the accuracy of the meter for us.

Its not always the tanks that cause the $$$.

I have 43 tanks up and running. Our bill is around 300$.
when i didnt have my tanks running it was 248$.

they run 24/7

power billing

a piece of equipment draws current measured in amps

its wattage is volts times amps for example a pump draws 5 amps.... at 120 volts thats 600 watts

if it runs for 24 hours thats 600x24 watt hours = 14400 watt hours

divide by 1000 as 1kw=1000 watts........... 14.4 kwh

so its now 14.4 kilo watt hours per day

for one month/ 30 days 14.4x30=432 kw hours

at 12 cents per kilowatt hour 432x12=5184cents or $51.84 per month:irked:

Yes...and after doing all the math our bills SHOULDN'T be what they are. in fact they went UP after we shut down the AC for the winter even though we only added two smallish tanks to the mix...Hence the complaint and the investigation...LOL

same here... we shut outs off when the cold fronts came thru ( so about 2-3 weeks ). and it went up 1 $... and thats without adding anything. I think we are being scammmeddd!!

come to think about it my elec. bill went up too, i wonder if they raised the price per kilo watt, and didn't say anything.. I talked to my friend up north, and he said that they are going to be getting an increase in their gas bill, so if that happens, like everything else, elec. will go up as well....
