So I just picked this guy up cause he's kinda oddly shaped. The picture is awful and he's acclimating now and I doubt I'll get a clear tank shot, but he has a weirdly high dorsal fin for a bgk, at least what I've seen.

This unusual? Or is that just like, how you tell a male from a female or something?

Just a different species of BGK. Not very commonly seen in the hobby.

those are not a BGK variant (not a natural occurring species), they are man-made hybrid of BGKs being produced in asia.

some kind of mormyrid. the fish wouldn't do this on their own. I suspect some kind of AI mix is going on, but haven't researched it. you know asia guards their hybrid secrets anyway.

I would like to get one because mormyrids are supposed to be fairly intelligent & I wonder whether these inherit any of that.

I noticed it behaves a little unusually. Made me think of a mormyrid actually, so it's funny you say that. Right now it's just hiding out in a dark spot.

Wow, thank you. Super interesting! I noticed its mouth seems a bit smaller than I'd expect on a bgk and that makes sense now.

Post some pics tonight! Shut down the lights for an hour, and then go to town with the flash on your camera lol. Loved taking photos of all my Knives, always made it a challenge. I've only seen a couple, but never really any good/clear shots.
