first off i searched this and all that came up was ID sharks, NOW. this fish was listed as a high fin shark and the top fin is as tall as the body is long. It is white and has a light black stripe. any ideas? no pics i'm sorry

It's a chinese hi-fin banded shark (Myxocyprinus asiaticus). They get huge but from what I've read, they grow really slowly after they hit the 10-12" mark, like maybe a couple of inches per year.

that is it! thats really big! i was hoping he stayed a relatively decent size of 6-9 inches. looks like i have to wait! what is the typical size tank suggested for these guys?

Since they grow so slow, I would probably start out with like a 75 gallon and upgrade as needed, but I think the final tank should be at least 300 gallons (8' x 2.5'w x 2'h).

A bit bigger..........they can grow over 4 foot.
They're not really slow growers - they just get stunted easily in 'small' tanks, as they need a fast current and lots of oxygen.
They look totally different as adults.

Really? I've never heard of them getting that big, it would be awesome to have a 4'+ hi fin :headbang2. And about the slow growing part, as I said before, I'm just going on what I've read, so it's not from personal experience or anything. ;)

They should have a different common name as adults. At full adult size they're hardly high-finned! Gorgeous as juveniles, neat fish, but I've yet to have a single store owner or employee tell me the truth about them. The ones I owned years ago were bought after the employee told me I should get a school of five to put in my 55 gal tank. I got three, went home, enjoyed them for a while, learned more about them, and gave them to someone with a pond.

that sucks, they look amazing as juvi's my dwarf gourami just kicked the crap out of my german ram and i was looking for something to calm his aggression.

They're growth varies quite a bit but generally the juveniles grow very quickly and then slow down substantially until they only grow about 1'' per year. Eventually they will no longer be the attractive fish they were as juveniles.
