So iv heard great things about these lights. does anyone have these on their tanks? one great thing iv heard is that the spectrum lasts up to 10-12 yrs or so. also i heard they dont preoduce alga as much iether but is still good for plants. im not sure how tru this is but soudns very interesting. sucks they are relititivly expensive to do. but honestly if its tru im sure its worth the money and ud make it bakc quick concidering not having to change bulbs every yr . anyone have any thoughts on this? from what iv heard there doin this more in the uk so hasnt really wokred its way over to north america yet.

A few MFKers have done LED setups.
Like you mentioned, the main drawback is the huge initial outlay.

You will save money on your power bill and not having to replace bulbs all of the time, but I think it would still take quite a while for them to 'pay themselves off'.

Prices keep coming down.Im going to wait another 2 years then look into switching over to led.

Check this site. Build your own, it's not to hard. LED's are generally all the same "brightness" (some are actually brighter) but the viewing angle changes. A "superbright" LED is not brighter than a normal LED but the light is focused in a much smaller area making is more intense in that area. Like using a magnifying glass to focus sun light on an ant. The sun light by it self is not intense enough to fry the ant, but when you focus it, it becomes very intense and can start stuff on fire.

I believe plants only need/want the blue and red wave lengths of the spectrum. More red during fruiting/flowering, more blue for vegetative growth. That would not make for a great viewing light in a display tank tho, unless you want a purple display light.

LED's are great for energy efficiency because they focus the light intensely, you can use only the parts of the spectrum you need and not waist energy on what the plants will not use, they last MUCH longer than any other bulb and they put out very little heat (wasted energy).

thanks guys. i was thinking of building my own, thnaks for the link!
