Anybody know what spectrum light would be ideal for growing a bunch of algae in high pH? Or is that pretty much the same as neutral? I'm setting up a sulawesi cardinal shrimp tank in a 20L and I want some high intensity LEDs to grow algae. Obviously I'll leave the lights on a bunch to promote algae growth, but I'm wondering what type of light is best.

Ideally I'd like to avoid something blue tinted, and for most things I do 6500k. And I'd prefer LEDs for energy efficiency and not having to replace bulbs, and the ripple effect with the surface tension being broken.

Any advice would be great, and specific product recommendations would be the best. Thanks y'all!

If you go to www.buildmyled.com you can do a custom spectrum for LEDs.

For non flowering plants ( like algae) you mostly need the reds around 6000k and 6500k.

If you really want pure growth go with custom and do mostly all red with one or two soft whites just so the tank does look all red looking at it.

I have one of their lights, very high quality and high light and no fans so totally silent. My plants grow like crazy (the ones that goldfish don't eat first, at least)

Red 650nm led will be fine.

If I'm doing a 30'' custom strip, which has 15 LED slots, how many should I make red and how many should I make soft white?

This is something of a display tank in that it's visible in my living room and I want it to look cool, and I don't want it to be pure red because then you won't really see the little red shrimps in it.

Algae thrives on rough surfaces, oxygenation(bubbles or water flow) and high light. If it were me I'd buy a nice chunk of lava rock (black or red) extra tall and have maybe 2-3 650nm led shining right on it AND for even better growth put a bubbler stone underneath the rock. You will grow hella algae then just make the rest of the leds a nice spectrum like 7-8k.

The lava rock is rough enough that algae will attach and the red led will help a million. Kind of the same concept of algae scrubber I sell but I use 2700k high output leds because its so close to the screen. Check it out: http://monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=559739

Same concept I'm advising for you so its somewhat controlled on the rock.

Just make sure their 650nm leds cuz other "red" leds will be useless.

Thanks f1! I've already got a bunch of lace and Texas holy rock in there, and I built a DIY moving bead filter out of a bubbler, shampoo bottle, and some substrat pro. So there's crazy oxygenation and rockwork. Can't wait to get the stock in here.

This is how it looks with a junk light and no stock other than the tester molly who'll graduate to a swamp feeder if she survives a few days.

edit--probably help to include the picture, huh? I'm forever doing this with emails.

Haha no worries. I'm on about every other day so it works out...! Leave the light on for 12 on 12 off.
