i have a tank that's been running for couple months without any fish. i bought some fancy guppies and they all died in two days. brought the water out to get it tested and the guy said that my pH is 7.8 and very hard water 4+. water parameters are: nitrate 0, nitrite 0, temp 78-80. is this why my fish died cause of high pH and hardness?

your nitrite AND nitrate are both 0 your tank isnt cycled (running it for a few months no fish doesnt help) there is ammonia present in the water that killed your fish the ammonia coupled wth a moderatly high ph (7.8 isnt that bad) is what killed your fish(ammonia is more toxic at higher pH levels) get an ammonia reading asap

guppies im pretty sure are good at dealing with hard water (heck they can survive in full saltwater which is very hard)

the tank was my planted tank with fish. when i moved, i gave the fish and plant away. so the tank is cycled. its still running just with out fish. i did water changes with new water and never tested the water until all the fish started dying.

if there have been no fish in there for months the tank is no longer cycled. The BB require the fish waste to survive - it's their food.

x2 ;) .. You stared at an empty tank for that long?

I wouldn't worry so much about the hardness or the higher ph. most livebearers thrive in these conditions. what you need to do is cycle the tank. this can be done by simply buying a couple feeder fish or dumping some food in the empty tank to form ammonia. also, guppies are rather fickle and have a short lifespan. They would be very vulnerable if the tank was not cycled

Hello,
I live in Norcal, where the water is very hard and alkaline.... Is there a way to correct this without having to buy an osmosis filter?
2 12" monos
1 16" timensis
1 10" orino
1 12" Tiger shovelnose

I use ADA aquasoil as the substrate in my shrimp tank. it consistently keeps the PH at 6.8 . for future reference, it is proper etiquette to make your own thread and not hijack someone elses. but welcome to MFK :)
