My ph is off the chat, past 8.6, I don't know what it is for sure but its at least 8.6.

I just got an R/O system, how much of the tank water can I safely replace with pure r/o water? and how slowly do I need to do this? 10% a day for x days or 10% a week for x weeks?

Trying to get nitrate to 5 or 10, tap water test 1ppm ammonia and 10ppm nitrate.

Tank 55G with a sump holding 20 gallons. total system is about 66 to 70 gallons.

Is there currently fish in the tank, if so what type and how many?

yes see my sig.

5 bala sharks, 1 redtail shark ,1 rainbow shark, 2 dwarf gourimia, 1 paradise gourimia.

Man after reading some post on here, people saying their nitrate is at or below 20ppm; makes me feel like s***. My fish must hate me with 40ppm, this is why I want to do what ever it takes to get it down. I lost 2 redtail sharks, 1 died when he starved him self to death, the other jumped in to a hob filter and was chopped up by the impeller.

I would just start doing daily 10% w/c with strait R/O water. Once you get your pH near 7.0 you will then need to experiment a bit with mixing the RO water with tap water to get the right mix to add to your tank.

Thanks. Ill let everyone know how it turns out. so its not true that striaght r/o water is bad for fish.

Yes it is true, this is why your will need to experiment with mixing the RO with your tap to find the right mix for your tank. The RO water has no minerals in it, so you can either mix with the tap water or add supplements.
