iv got a 20L and im looking to do something new with it. the filter im using right now is a Fluval 3 plus. its rated for 34 gallons. should the current created by it be enough for hillstreams or will i need to invest in a small powerhead? im curious about the idea of mixing these with spiny eels. i know some macrognathus come from streams but im not sure how fast flowing they are in relation to the streams the loaches come from. basically, id like to get some hillstreams and keep the two yellow tail barred spiny eels i have right now. could this work?

also, how many can i keep in a 20 long?

Hillstreams are not bothered by how powerful the flow gets. They can withstand flows more powerful than your current powerhead. At least 12 can fit in a 20g long.

ok, so do they need more current than what my filter is making right now or is that enough?
Provided a more powerful powerhead does not make the flow run in circles like a whirlpool, you could try another.

ok so a whirlpool is bad. the fluval is setup on the back lefthand corner and the nozzle is almost at the very top of the water level. should a powerhead be placed next to it (at a lower level) and pointing it the same direction or should i place it on the opposite side and create "dueling powerheads" (or is dueling powerheads what your telling not to do since it might create a whirlpool?)

the thing is that i dont want to set up an under-sand tubing system with the intake on one side and the outtake on the other. id prefer to just have a stand alone powerhead blowing in the same direction as the filter.

Keep the flow in one direction and avoid whirlpool effect. Hillstreams don't live in a whirlpool environment. Their area has one way powerful currents that they fight against to go up the stream. For most species, they climb waterfalls as well as a means to upstream. You wonder why their body shape matches the concept aeroplane.;)

now iv just got to see if removing all the duckweed will help algea growth, cause right now i dont have any.... and im using a coralife T5 unit, i think it might be at 65 watts.

For algae growth stick a rocks outside in a small aquarium in the direct sunlight and let it grow. Just put them in when you feed the loaches. My hillstreams also love bloodworms!

Sounds like a good tank! I just finished a river tank setup in a standard 30 gal. You can search for the post by searching "hillstream". I am still searching for the fish as I want to pick them up instead of ordering them. I currently have several river rocks outside for algae growth and a bunch more piled up in the tank for the loaches as they really like large round rocks they can hold onto. I also have a snail problem limiting algae growth that I am taking care off. If you have more light penetrating the tank then more algae will grow.
Good Luck!
