Has anyone had or seen a pike with HITH?

How hard is it usually to switch them from live to pellets?

I am probably going to redo my 75 (again) and pike are one option. We just got a couple 'red' pike in at work today, they are 4-5". I was thinking about these. They aren't showing much red yet though.

i am sure they can get HITH but i've never seen one with it. i had a few pike eating sinking pellets and fresh shrimp and beefheart. shouldn't be difficult to ween them off live food.

My female C. proteus had HITH for a while and it was becuase of the pellets I got her on. She started eating pellets but it was a lot messier than when she was eating krill and blood worms(whole animals). I kept up on my regular water changes but the access build up from the pellets being pushed out through her gills made the water parameters go bad. I stopped feeding her the pellets and did some extra water changes and now I'm back to normal and she has almost entirely recovered from it (its hard to tell she had HITH now).

You gotta watch out with "red pikes". I have seen a bunch of different species come in under this name, one of the being Crenicichla sp. venezuela. If it turns out to be a ven. than you better be ready for a bigger tank... much, much, much bigger. We are talking a pike as thick as your arm.

Any really good id pages, or should I get and post a pic?

What pellets were you feeding?

The pellets I was feeding are the- Azoo 9 In 1 Arowana Sticks-(for all aros and large carnivorous fish). I really think it is a good product, it is just messier than whole foods and I didn't change my routine until I noticed what was wrong. Pikes eating pellets tend to shoot a lot of the ... "pellet dust" out of their gills. So I had a build up in my gravel more often than I was used too.

And about the ID- I'g get a pic and post it up here. Some one will know what it is.

OR you could check out this site- its a good one-http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/5491/photos.html
Good luck!

Some of the higher quality pellets do not seem to fall apart the way others do. Hikari is good, but that particular food is supposed to swell up, so it is more fragile, but their others aren't bad. And New Life Spectrum is the best stuff out there and it doesn't really fall apart much at all.
