Hey all, had no problems with hole in the head since i was young with oscars and poor water quality which i always assumed was the cause... well my water is always pristine now and tested regularly 25% water change weekly or a 50% fortnightly if im busy!??? well a few weeks ago i added a large flowerhorn with some minor hith lesions now my festae have some small ones too and my prized midas has some supect marks too!!!! just dosed the tank with water lifes octozin ( active ingredient dimetridazole) hoping this clears it up quickly as some people claim.... always seems to be going so well then one dodgy fish uuuuurgh...

i'll post the results in due course, been some promising results on the oscar forums time will tell i guess...:irked:

tank size, fish size, water test results? never had HITM problems, curious how the treatment goes.

FH for some reason are super prone to Hexamita, don't know why. My motto is "Quarantine, Quarantine, Quarantine!" I assume all new fish are like dirty prostitutes, don't know where they've been and what they have. Good Luck, you might be better off feeding foods soaked with Mag Sulfate along with your medicated water? Good Luck man!

cheers i'll try to sort some thursday as im working long days and have the day off... where would i find magnesium sulphate, im in the uk remember!? pharmacy?

I would up the water change to fin level, or if you can 50% twice a week. Best cure for HITH is clean pristine water. nitrates never above 10 to 20 ppm. lower if you can. It takes a long time to heal, and fish will always be susceptible to again ones they have had it. might want to treat with melafix, will not hurt the bio filter and is a all natural anti-bacterial, think neosporin(sp) for your fish.

12" suncat? be the same as a eclipse or bulls eye cat?

cheers and bullseye cat, i will run this octozine then try to up the changes...

Dimetridazole is very similar to Metronidazole and is the correct medication to use for HITH. Continue to dose tank for the full corse of treatment.

Magnesium sulphate aka epsom salt can be found at most pharmacies in the UK. Just make sure NOT to buy any scented or soap/scented epsom salt.

HITH can be caused by a number of different stress related triggers (poor diet, poor water quality, protozoa, etc) and in this case I think that we can safely rule out water quality, and diet, which leaves your FH bringing it in via what is most likely a case of Sprironucleus vortens (Hexamita). In which case you might want to read the following thread:
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?523470-Treating-Hexamita-aka-Spironucleus

Soaking your pellets in epsom salt, along with adding metro to your water is your best bet at wiping this out.

FYI - the reason that FH are magnets for hexamita is due to the fact that they genetically weak fish, bred soley for looks, with no regards to their overall immunity or vigor. When they come under stress they become ill very easily. This is the case for most Asian "designer" fish.

Good luck.
