So I rescued two Oscars from a co-worker who hadn't fed them in about a month and simply gave up on water testing... long story short I bought the tank from this lazy guy and inherited his Oscars... both have Hole in the head one has it REAL BAD... I have treated using API general cure and I have been feeding them well and keeping up on water conditions but the HITH seems to be the same after almost two months.... yet they are behaving much better seems they are more attentive and simply happier but How long should I wait before expecting visual results (holes go away) or should I keep treating them every month or so until better? Thanks any advice will help.

It could be that the holes will never heal over. Since you been doin this for two months straight, I would keep the water temp high at 80, water changes once a week about 50 percent, Varied Diet(pellets, Bloodworms, Peas, etc) NO FEEDERS. I would also look into some other kind of treatment maybe but i dont know cause you been treating for two months str8. Sometimes the best way for HITH to go away is just clean water, better diet, and warmer water. You can only hope to stop the progress of HITH. Maybe they will heal over time. Hang in there, good job for being there for those fish. GOODLUCK!

Clean water, salt, maybe some metronidazole.

I've seen oscars damn near as old as me that have just kind of perpetually had a bit of HItH, though, so it may never go away. But if you're keeping the water clean, you can be sure they'll be OK.

Keep an eye on the poop. Sometimes HiTH can be a symptom of a parasite or something too (which metro can treat, but not every one of them)

I rescued my adult jag who had hit six months later looks just as bad despite the best meeds food lights salts he will never recover and I hate it ESP when people come over and check out my fish and all you see is the horrible scarring! Good job for rescuing the oscars I'm sure hay are a lot happier and healthier now!

whatever u do man, just dont get impatience. sure it can look ugly but try to see past that. Oscars are really owner responsive, and can be great fish. Just try to see the other great quality of the fish. I have a young GT with first stages of HITH that he got from the LFS, but I stopped it from progressing but sure he will always have the small hole. I dont care though. He is my pet and a great fish.

So the short answer is it might never heal over but at least it’s not getting worse... it’s not only sad to see but I feel I have to explain to my friends it’s not my fault they have HITH LOL! I am embarrassed...

Dave B thanks so much for the link I will be getting those tablets... that way better so i am not treating my whole tank and affecting my other fish :) thanks again I didn’t know it came in tablet form...
