HITH?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
HITH or Hexamita, is usually caused by poor water quality. Their are meds you can get to cure it but once a fish has had it they become more likely to get it again. Water changes can help cure HITH as well. If left untreated, a fish can die from it.

Also Add Salt after Water Changes, that helps in the overall health of the Fish. I add about about a quarter of a cup of salt to every 55g of water in my 400g. Good Luck with treatment though.

I had an oscar with bad HITH.
I removed the carbon, varied its diet, kept the nitrates low and had plenty of bioligical filtration and it cleared up.

I agree with everything said and especially advocate a varied diet as Rallysman already mentioned. Fish that are famous for getting HITH like oscars, synodontis, SA/CA cichlids in general are often fed too much of the same thing on a regular basis, namely too much dry food. Same as humans, "fish are what they eat" too!

Loach, I like that quote: Fish are what they Eat, Too! A mostly common range of food used is dried, Frozen, Live (Only as Treats) or Full BloodWorms/BlackWorms/NightWorms and organic whole foods.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that HITH is due to parasites that start making their evil little living inside of a fishes stomach due to bad conditions followed by an immunity breakdown (?):uhoh:

HITH is due to bad water quality and you can treat it by doing more waterchanges like 2-3 times a week (25%+) add some salt and vary diet.

You can totally prevent HITH by keeping water clean add varying in foods and its also good to add vitamins such as vitachem or liquid centrum
