I have an oily film on top of my water. I remember having to reach in one of my tanks unexpectedly a couple of days ago (I always wash my hands well before reaching in a tank but I didn't that time). I don't remember what I doing but I felt like I needed to do it right away. Anyway, I think I may have had some grease under my fingernails from work or something. That's my best guess.

Any ideas on how to get it out? I used a paper towel to try to sort of skim it off the top but that didn't seem to work. Then I hooked up a canister filter and attached a cleaning vacuum to the intake. If I hold it right I can get it to pull water from the surface. I can watch the film being sucked in but I'm not sure how much progress is being made or how long this will take.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

hook up a strong blubber in the tank ..it will break it up in no time ^_^

This happens whenever I put some flakes in the water to get it to the bottom. It goes away after a few hours for me. Yours might be a different type oil. Might have to call BP for some clean-up and apologies

I hooked up an aerator. It's creating a circle in the film. It's just about like what the filters are doing so maybe it will clear up. We shall see. I hope it doesn't affect the fish. A very, very small amout of oil can create quite a large sheen on a body of water.

You need MORE surface aggitation!! Aim your canister output upwards so it creats turbulance, i have a 1100gph circulator 6" below the surface aimed up and it blows water and no film!

Just more flow at the water line is all, easily solvable problem!

Thanks. I'll go down there and do that now.

What he said! I have my cfs 500 and rena xp3 output pointed towards the surface just so they create a small ripple and no film!

Well, that made all the difference in the world. Looks good. Thank you for the advice.
