For a while I've been looking at saving for a 125 gallon aquarium to stock with some oddballs. But now I think I would rather take the path of saving even more money and eventually either buying a kinkajou or large parrot (African grey or macaw of some variety). Of course I would do my research on the two more expensive animals as I saved my money and waited til' i had enough.

What path should I take?

seeing you want a dwarf caiman. dwarf caimans are alot of work. id go for the fish hahaha. What i always do is i buy aniamls that i think are awesome but are to much responsability. Soi just change my schedule around to make it work for me and the animal if you can do that go for the parrots!

Yeah that signature hasn't been updated for a while, in fact I will do that right now. I would still love a dwarf caiman, but my parents were accepting of that idea until after they remembered the idea that I would be moving out of the house for college soon and that was one pet they wouldn't take care of.

But that is basically what I have done too.

Parrots are messy and are a long term investment. Parrots can live to be 80+ years. If you are going to college, put off buying a pet and save your money for beer. LOL!

x2.

Stick with fish or "normal" pets that you can take with you; you don't want your parents to kill or lose your beloved expensive pet while you're away.

Save it till after colledge. Take it from me caimans are a ton of work simply because of eventual size and aggression.

Can a kinkajou live in a dorm? I would expect parrots can't....

No, you're pretty much restricted to a 20 gallon aquarium or less (10 gallons for some colleges) or no pets at all; typically, only fishes are allowed in the aquariums, so reptiles are not an option. Check with your college's residence life staff on that one and check the student handbook section on pets in residence halls.

nope, they need an enclosure about the size of your half of the dorm and if/when you let it out, it will get into EVERYTHING. They are very hyper and very high maintenance.
